Biodiversity of the family Homalopsidae

Genus
Dieurostus

Kerala Mud Snake

Kerala-Schlammnatter

1853 Eurostus Dumeril [not Eurostus Dallas 1851] (type species: Eurostus dussumieri Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril 1854)
1901 Dieurostus Berg (substitute name for Eurostus Dumeril 1853)
Contents: 1 species, which is endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of Enhydris (e.g., Murphy 2007). Revalidated as a separate genus by Kumar, Sanders, George & Murphy (2012).
Distribution: As for the single species.

Dieurostus dussumieri

Kerala Mud Snake, (Dussumier's Smooth Water Snake)

Kerala-Schlammnatter

Kerala-muddersnog

1854 Eurostus dussumieri Dumeril, Bibron & Dumeril
Hypsirhina dussumieri Jan 1863
Enhydris dussumieri Smith 1943
Dieurostus dussumieri Kumar, Sanders, George & Murphy 2012
1913 Hypsirhina malabarica Werner (Murphy 2007)

Remarks: Murthy (1985) also lists this species from "Bengal", and Sarker & Sarker (1985) from Bangladesh, but both areas are far from the range given by Murphy (2007). These reports are probably based on misidentifications (possibly of Ferania sieboldii), as subsequent publications do not include the species from these areas (Ahmed & Dasgupta 1992; Das 1996). Also listed for Tamil Nadu by Aengals (2009), but according to Kumar & Captain (2011), dussumierii is restricted to Kerala. See further remarks under Ferania sieboldii.
Distribution: India (Kerala).
