Giant Plated Lizards, Rock Plated Lizards, Plated Rock Lizards, African Plated Lizards

Felsenschildechsen

Kæmpepladeøgler

2013 Matobosaurus Bates, Tolley, Edwards, Davids, Silva & Branch (type species: Gerrhosaurus validus Smith 1849)
Contents: 2 species, none of which are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: The two species of this genus were previously considered a single species and included in Gerrhosaurus.
Distribution: Southern Africa.
Reported from: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West Province), Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Matobosaurus maltzahni

Western Giant Plated Lizard

Westliche Felsenschildechse

Vestlig Kæmpepladeøgle

1938 Gerrhosaurus maltzahni Grys
Gerrhosaurus validus maltzahni Loveridge 1942
Matobosaurus maltzahni Bates, Tolley, Edwards, Davids, Silva & Branch 2013
1938 Gerrhosaurus validus damarensis Fitzsimons (Loveridge 1942)

Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies of validus (e.g., Wermuth 1968; Branch 1998). Revalidated as a separate species by Bates, Tolley, Edwards, Davids, Silva & Branch (2013).
Distribution: Angola, Namibia.

Matobosaurus validus

Eastern Giant Plated Lizard

Östliche Felsenschildechse

Østlig Kæmpepladeøgle

1849 Gerrhosaurus validus Smith
Matobosaurus validus Bates, Tolley, Edwards, Davids, Silva & Branch 2013
1854 Gerrhosaurus robustus Peters (Boulenger 1887)
1930 Gerrhosaurus ciprianii Scortecci (Loveridge 1942)

Remarks: Previously included maltzahni. The type locality (which is in Lesotho) is regarded as erroneous, since the species has not been verified from the country (Bates, Tolley, Edwards, Davids, Silva & Branch 2013). A single record from North West Province, South Africa, is regarded as a translocation (Bates, Branch, Bauer, Burger, Marais, Alexander & Villiers [eds.] 2014).
Distribution: Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa (KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West Province), Zambia, Zimbabwe.
