1921 Archaeolacerta Mertens (type species: Lacerta oxycephala bedriagae Camerano 1885)
Contents: 1 species, which is not endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of Lacerta (e.g.; Arnold 1989). Already Lanza, Cei & Crespo (1977) proposed revalidation as a separate genus, however, the proposal did not gain general acceptance until supported by Arribas (1997) and Arnold, Arribas & Carranza (2007). Some authors prefer to retain it as a subgenus of Lacerta (e.g., Sindaco & Jeremchenko 2008).
Distribution: As for the single species.
