1843 Pholidoscelis Fitzinger (type species: Ameiva major Dumeril & Bibron 1839)
Contents: 20 species, of which 15 (75.0%) are endemic. In addition to this, 2 species are considered extinct (cineraceus, major), both of which were endemic.
Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of Ameiva (e.g., Schwartz & Henderson 1988). Revalidated as a separate genus by Goicoechea, Frost, Riva, Pellegrino, Sites, Rodrigues & Padial (2016). Tucker, Colli, Giugliano, Hedges, Hendry, Lemmon, Lemmon, Sites & Pyron (2016) pointed out that the grammatical gender of Pholidoscelis is masculine.
Distribution: West Indies.
Reported from: Anguilla (Anguilla Island, Little Scrub, Sombrero), Antigua & Barbuda (Antigua, Barbuda, Redonda), Bahamas (incl. Great Inagua Bank [incl. Great Inagua]), British Virgin Islands (incl. Anegada), Cuba (incl. Isla de la Juventud), Dominica, Dominican Republic, Haiti (incl. Grande Cayemite, Ile de la Gonâve, Île-à-Vache), Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Puerto Rico (incl. Remarks: Regarded as extinct (Lorvelec, Pascal, Pavis & Feldman 2007). The type locality (Cayenne, French Guiana) is considered erroneous, and the origin of this species was previously considered to be Martinique (e.g., Baskin & Williams 1966), but Breuil (2002) showed that it lived in the Petite Terre Islands off Guadeloupe.
Distribution: Guadeloupe (Iles de la Petite Terre: Terre-de-Bas).
