Borsuk-Bialynicka & Moody (1984) reduced this group to subfamily status within the Agamidae. It has also been referred to as Leiolepididae or Leiolepidinae (e.g., Frost & Etheridge 1989; Frost, Etheridge, Janies & Titus 2001).
