Walterinnesia aegyptia

Black Desert Cobra

Wüstenkobra

Ørkenkobra

1887 Walterinnesia aegyptia Lataste
1905 Naja morgani Mocquard (syn. Carranza, Al-Amri, Busaidi, Els, Estarellas, Al-Buthari, Koppetsch, Tulloch, Al Saadi, Al-Rashdi, Al Hashmi & Burriel-Carranza 2025)
Walterinnesia morgani Nilson & Rastegar-Pouyani 2007
1908 Atractaspis wilsoni Wall (syn. Golay & al. 1993)

Other common name:
aegyptia (s.s.): Western Black Desert Cobra
morgani: Eastern Black Desert Cobra, (Morgan's Desert Cobra)
Remarks: For many years, the taxon morgani was regarded as a synonym of aegyptia (e.g., Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992; McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999). Nilson & Rastegar-Pouyani (2007) then revalidated morgani as a separate species. However, some authors (e.g., Rajabizadeh 2017; Kamali 2020) retained morgani as a synonym of aegyptia. Most recently, morgani was synonymized again with aegyptia by Carranza, Al-Amri, Busaidi, Els, Estarellas, Al-Buthari, Koppetsch, Tulloch, Al Saadi, Al-Rashdi, Al Hashmi & Burriel-Carranza (2025).
Although reported (as aegyptia) by several authors from Syria (e.g., Welch 1983; Joger 1984; Disi & Böhme 1996; Golay & al. 1993; Gruber 1989; Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992), presence of this species in the country was not confirmed with voucher specimens until published by Sindaco, Serra & Menegon (2006).
Although listed for Kuwait by several authors, including the Ph.D. dissertation by Alsdirawi (1989), Amr, Alenezi, Al-Sayegh & Baker (2021) did not include the species for the country, neither did they claim previous reports to be erroneous. Apparently the latter authors overlooked Alsdirawi's (1989) dissertation, which was not included in their literature list.
Records from Lebanon and Libya are regarded as erroneous (Schleich, Kästle & Kabisch 1996; David & Ineich 1999).
Distribution: Egypt (incl. Sinai), Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey.
