Taxonomy of the family Colubridae
Bibliography of the genus Xenopholis
Biodiversity of the family Colubridae

Genus
Xenopholis

South American Flat-headed Snakes

Südamerikanische Flachkopfnattern

Sydamerikanske Fladhovedsnoge

1874 Gerrhosteus Cope (type species: Gerrhosteus prosopis Cope 1874)
1901 Paroxyrhopus Schenkel (type species: Paroxyrhopus reticulatus Schenkel 1900; syn. Hoge & Federsoni 1975)
1925 Sympeltophis Werner (type species: Sympeltophis ungalioides Werner 1925)
Contents: 3 species, none of which are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Distribution: South America.
Reported from: Bolivia, Brazil (Acre, Alagoas, Amapa, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceara, Distrito Federal, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Para, Paraiba, Parana, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rondonia, Sao Paulo, Tocantins), Ecuador, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Venezuela.

Xenopholis scalaris

Northern Flat-headed Snake

Nördliche Flachkopfnatter

Nordlig Fladhovedsnog

1861 Elapomorphus scalaris Wucherer
Xenopholis scalaris Peters 1960
1869 Xenopholis braconnieri Peters (Peters & Orejas-Miranda 1970)
1874 Gerrhosteus prosopis Cope (Peters & Orejas-Miranda 1970)
1925 Sympeltophis ungalioides Werner (Peters & Orejas-Miranda 1970)

Remarks: Although reported from Guyana (e.g., Reynolds, MacCulloch, Tamessar, Watson, Cole & Townsend 2008; Cole, Townsend, Reynolds, MacCulloch & Lathrop 2013), the species is apparently absent from the country (Kuijpers 2024). Although reported also from Colombia by Pérez-Santos & Moreno (1988), presence in the country needs confirmation, according to the strongly critical review of this work by Cadle (1992), in which he points out the considerable amount of unverifiable information presented by these authors. Not mentioned from Bolivia by Pincheira-Donoso (2002).
Distribution: Bolivia, Brazil (Acre, Amapa, Amazonas, Bahia, Espirito Santo, Mato Grosso, Para, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rondonia, Sao Paulo), Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Surinam, Venezuela.
