Taxonomy of the family Homalopsidae
Bibliography of the genus Brachyorrhos
Biodiversity of the family Homalopsidae

Genus
Brachyorrhos

Moluccan Short-tailed Snakes

Molukkanische Kurzschwanznattern

Molukkanske Korthalesnoge

1826 Brachyorrhos Kuhl (type species: Coluber albus Linnaeus 1758)
Brachyorrhus Agassiz 1847 [emendation]
1879 Atractocephalus Sauvage (type species: Atractocephalus raffrayi Sauvage 1879; syn. Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012)
1879 Oxyorrhos Fitzinger (type species: Oxyorrhos fusiformis Fischer 1879; syn. Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012)
Contents: 5 species, all of which are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Previously included Calamophis. Records from Western New Guinea (incl. Yapen) refer to the genus Calamophis. The Morotai population of Brachyorrhos is currently unassigned to any species, but may belong to raffrayi. Presence in the Aru Islands needs confirmation, as the single known specimen from these islands may have wrong locality data. Records from Timor are based on a specimen assumed to have come from Seram. Presence of the genus in Bacan, Banda Islands, Haruku, Laut, and Saparua is tentatively accepted herein, but is based on literature records which need confirmation. Presence in Borneo, Java, and Lesser Sundas is regarded as unlikely. All above remarks are based on Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders (2012).
Distribution: Indonesia (Ambon, Bacan, Banda Islands, Buru, Halmahera, Haruku, Laut (off Seram), Morotai, Saparua, Seram, Ternate).

Brachyorrhos albus

Ambon Short-tailed Snake, (Moluccan Short-tailed Snake)

Ambon-Kurzschwanznatter

Ambon-korthalesnog

1758 Coluber albus Linnaeus
Brachyorrhos albus Kuhl in Schlegel 1826

Remarks: Previously included gastrotaenius. Coluber brachyurus Shaw 1802, Brachyorrhos kuhlii Boie 1827, and Calamaria brachyorrhos Schlegel 1837 have previously been listed as synonyms of Brachyorrhos albus, but all are synonyms of Atractus trilineatus (Hoogmoed 1982; Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012).
Distribution: Indonesia (Ambon, Haruku, Laut (off Seram), Saparua, Seram).

Brachyorrhos gastrotaenius

Buru Short-tailed Snake

Buru-Kurzschwanznatter

Buru-korthalesnog

1860 Rhabdion gastrotaenia Bleeker
Brachyorrhos gastrotaenius Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012
1879 Oxyorrhos fusiformis Fischer (Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012)

Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of albus (e.g., Murphy 2007). Revalidated by Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders (2012). The type locality, "Amboina" (=Ambon), is in error (Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012).
Distribution: Indonesia (Buru).

Brachyorrhos pygmaeus

Seram Short-tailed Snake

Seram-Kurzschwanznatter

Seram-korthalesnog

2021 Brachyorrhos pygmaeus Murphy & Voris

Distribution: Indonesia (Seram).

Brachyorrhos raffrayi

Ternate Short-tailed Snake

Ternate-Kurzschwanznatter

Ternate-korthalesnog

1879 Atractocephalus raffrayi Sauvage
Brachyorrhos raffrayi Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012
1880 Brachyorrhos albus var. conjunctus Fischer (Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012)

Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of Calamophis jobiensis (e.g., Murphy 2007). Revalidated by Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders (2012). The Morotai population of Brachyorrhos is currently unassigned to any species, but may belong to raffrayi (Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders 2012).
Distribution: Indonesia (Ternate).

Brachyorrhos wallacei

Halmahera Short-tailed Snake

Halmahera-Kurzschwanznatter

Halmahera-korthalesnog

2012 Brachyorrhos wallacei Murphy, Mumpuni, Lang, Gower & Sanders

Distribution: Indonesia (Halmahera).
