Contents: 23 living species, of which 22 (95.7%) are endemic. In addition to this, 1 species (cariei), which was endemic, is considered extinct.

Remarks: Previously included all species of this family, as well as those now placed in the families Gerrhopilidae and Xenotyphlopidae. Pyron & Wallach (2014) reassigned coecatus and zenkeri to Typhlops, thus expanding the distribution of the genus to include West Africa.
Distribution: Discontinuous: West Indies, W. Africa.
Reported from: Bahamas (incl. Little Bahama Bank), British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Cuba, Dominican Republic (incl. Isla Alto Velo), Ghana, Guinea, Haiti (incl. Grande Cayemite, Ile de la Gonâve), Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Navassa, Puerto Rico.

Records from Florida (USA) and South America (e.g., Guyana) are based on misidentifications or incorrect locality data (Dixon & Hendricks 1979; McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999; Domínguez & Díaz 2011; Cole, Townsend, Reynolds, MacCulloch & Lathrop 2013).
