Contents: 10 species, of which 7 (70.0%) are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Dunn (1939) suggested that Celestus should be regarded as a synonym of Diploglossus, a proposal which has been followed by some authors (e.g., Underwood 1959; Wermuth 1969; Hidalgo 1982; Campbell & Camarillo R. 1994), while other authors have retained Celestus as a valid genus (e.g., Smith & Taylor 1950; Stuart 1963; Peters & Donoso-Barros 1970; Strahm & Schwartz 1977; Wilson, Porras & McCranie 1986; Schwartz & Henderson 1988; Savage & Lips 1994; Powell, Henderson, Adler & Dundee 1996). Also the phylogeny of Pyron, Burbrink & Wiens (2013) indicated non-monophyly with respect to Celestus and Ophiodes. Schools & Hedges (2021) reviewed the subfamily Diploglossinae (as Diploglossidae), recognizing both Celestus and Diploglossus as valid genera, along with several other revalidated or new genera.
