Previously included the species now placed in

The three species of Hemibungarus were previously regarded as subspecies of a single species (calligaster)
(e.g., Leviton 1964).
They are regarded herein as separate species, following most recent publications
(e.g., Leviton, Brown & Siler 2014;
Supsup, Puna, Asis, Redoblado, Panaguinit, Guinto, Rico, Diesmos, Brown & Mallari 2016;
Weinell & Brown 2018).
Taxonomic status of a single record from Samar (Leviton 1963, based on Peters 1861) is uncertain.
