Contents: 21 living species, all of which are endemic. In addition to this, 1 species (cariei), which was endemic, is considered extinct.
Remarks: Previously included all species of this family, as well as those now placed in the families Gerrhopilidae and Xenotyphlopidae. Pyron & Wallach (2014) reassigned coecatus and zenkeri to Typhlops, thus expanding the distribution of the genus to include West Africa.
Distribution: Discontinuous: West Indies, W. Africa.
Reported from: Bahamas (incl. Little Bahama Bank), British Virgin Islands, Cameroon, Cuba, Dominican Republic (incl. Isla Alto Velo), Ghana, Guinea, Haiti (incl. Grande Cayemite, Ile de la Gonâve), Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Navassa, Puerto Rico.

Remarks: Previously included silus and the Cuban populations now known as oxyrhinus and pachyrhinus (Domínguez & Díaz 2011; Hedges, Marion, Lipp, Marin & Vidal 2014). Records from Cuba refer to these species. Records from Florida (USA) and South America (e.g., Guyana) are based on misidentifications or incorrect locality data (Dixon & Hendricks 1979; McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999; Domínguez & Díaz 2011; Cole, Townsend, Reynolds, MacCulloch & Lathrop 2013).
Introduced to: USA (Florida).
Distribution: Bahamas (incl. Little Bahama Bank).

Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of lumbricalis (e.g., Hahn 1980). Revalidated as a separate species by Hedges, Marion, Lipp, Marin & Vidal (2014), although possible validity was suggested already by Domínguez & Díaz (2011) and later confirmed by the same authors (Domínguez & Díaz 2015).
