Gonyocephalus godeffroyi Boulenger 1885
Hypsilurus godeffroyi Moody 1980

Remarks: Previously included macrolepis (e.g., Wermuth 1967). The type locality, "Pelew Inseln" (=Palau), is presumed to be in error (Crombie & Pregill 1999; Bauer & Watkins-Colwell 2001) and the type is supposed to have been collected in one of the islands off northern New Guinea. The species has never been seen or collected in Palau again. However, skeletal remains of an agamid lizard from Ngeaur in Palau indicate that an agamid lizard, possibly an endemic species, occurred in Palau in pre-European times (Crombie & Pregill 1999). Nevertheless, presence of any species of the family Agamidae in Palau remains unconfirmed. A single record from Queensland, Australia, refer to longii (but see remarks under that species). The distribution given below should be regarded as tentative, as some of these may refer to hikidanus or longii (Manthey & Denzer 2006).
Distribution: Indonesia (Western New Guinea), Papua New Guinea (Bismarck Archipelago [New Britain], Eastern New Guinea, North Solomon Islands [Bougainville]).

Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of godeffroyi (e.g., Boulenger 1885; Cogger 1979). Revalidated by Manthey & Denzer (2006). A single, vouchered record from Queensland, Australia, previously questioned (e.g., Cogger 1979, 1996), was considered verified as longii by Manthey & Denzer (2006), but the alleged provenance of this specimen was rejected by Shea (2008).
Distribution: Papua New Guinea (Bismarck Archipelago [Duke of York, New Britain], North Solomon Islands [Bougainville]), Solomon Islands.
