Remarks:
Previously included in Uromastyx (e.g., Wermuth 1967).
Revalidated by Wilms, Böhme, Wagner, Lutzmann & Schmitz (2009), However, Sindaco, Venchi & Grieco (2013) only recognized Saara as a subgenus of Uromastyx.
Böhme (1982) and Moody (1983) separated the genera Uromastyx (incl. Saara) and Leiolepis from the family Agamidae and revalidated the family name Uromastycidae for that purpose.
Borsuk-Bialynicka & Moody (1984) reduced this group to subfamily status within the Agamidae.
It has also been referred to as Leiolepididae or Leiolepidinae (e.g., Frost & Etheridge 1989; Frost, Etheridge, Janies & Titus 2001).
