1992 Cercolophia Vanzolini (type species: Amphisbaena roberti Gans 1964)

Contents: 6 species, of which 3 (50.0%) are endemic.
Remarks: Mott & Vieites (2009) synonymized Cercolophia (as well as Anops, Aulura, Bronia, and Leposternon) with Amphisbaena. These genera are retained as valid herein, following many subsequent works (e.g., Ribeiro, Nogueira, Cintra, Silva & Zaher 2011; Ribeiro, Santos-Junior & Zaher 2015; Costa & Bernils 2014; Cacciali, Scott, Aquino-Ortiz, Fitzgerald & Smith 2016, Ribeiro, Silveira & Santos-Junior 2018).
Distribution: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (Bahia, Espirito Santo, Goias, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Parana, Rondonia, São Paulo, Tocantins), Paraguay.

Remarks: There is a single record of uncertain status from Paraguay, which has sometimes been referred to borelli (e.g., Gans 2005), sometimes to steindachneri (e.g., Cacciali, Scott, Aquino-Ortiz, Fitzgerald & Smith 2016; Motte, Núñez, Cacciali, Brusquetti, Scott & Aquino 2009).

Remarks: Previously included borellii. There is a single record of uncertain status from Paraguay, which has sometimes been referred to borelli (e.g., Gans 2005), sometimes to steindachneri (e.g., Cacciali, Scott, Aquino-Ortiz, Fitzgerald & Smith 2016; Motte, Núñez, Cacciali, Brusquetti, Scott & Aquino 2009). Records from Sao Paulo are erroneous (Costa & Bérnils 2018).
Distribution: Bolivia, Brazil (Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondonia).
