2 species of which none are endemic  0% 100%

Remarks:  Until recently, this family contained only a single species, the Indian Gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). Based on molecular studies, the Malayan Gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii) was transferred from the family Crocodylidae to the family Gavialidae by Willis, McAliley, Neeley & Densmore (2007). Already Buffetaut (1985) and Norell (1989) had suggested the close relationship between Gavialis and Tomistoma. Roos, Aggarwal & Janke (2007) included both genera of this family in the family Crocodylidae.

Distribution:  S. Asia.

Bhutan, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal.
