Remarks:  The distribution records listed for each species include not only the present, but also the historical distribution, although several species have vanished today from many places where they used to occur. It is noted in brackets, if a species is known to have disappeared from an area. Roos, Aggarwal & Janke (2007) included both genera of the family Gavialidae (Gavialis, Tomistoma) in the family Crocodylidae.
