1854 Lycognathus textilis Duméril & Bibron (Wade 2011)
Coronella textilis Strauch 1862
Psammophylax cucullatus textilis Jan & Sordelli 1866
Macroprotodon textilis Rochebrune 1884
Macroprotodon cucullatus textilis Vasconcelos & Harris 2006
Macroprotodon brevis textilis Martínez-del-Mármol, Harris, Geniez, Pous & Salvi 2019
1882 Macroprotodon maroccanus Peters (Böhme (ed.) 1999)
1927 Macroprotodon cucullatus melanocephala Mosauer & Wallis (Wade 2011)

Remarks: Previously included brevis, mauritanicus, and the population now assigned to abubakeri. Martínez-del-Mármol, Harris, Geniez, Pous & Salvi (2019) regarded textilis as a subspecies of brevis, but without discussion. Moreover, the authors apparently did not notice that the former name is older than the latter, which would give priority to textilis. Consequently, the species herein referred to as M. brevis would therefore have to change name to M. textilis, including brevis as a subspecies. A record from Mauritania (Boulenger 1919; repeated by Kramer & Schnurrenberger 1963; Papenfuss 1969; and Schleich, Kästle & Kabisch 1996) was probably based on specimens from Morocco (Padial 2006).
Distribution: Algeria, Egypt (incl. Sinai), Israel, Italy (Pelagie Islands: Lampedusa), Libya, Morocco, Tunisia, Western Sahara.

Macroprotodon mauritanicus

Algerian False Smooth Snake

Nordafrikanische Kapuzennatter

Macroprotodon cucullatus mauritanicus Wade 1988
1854 Lycognathus taeniatus Duméril & Bibron (Wade 2011)
Coronella taeniata Strauch 1862

Remarks: Revalidated as a separate species by Wade (2001).
Introduced to: Spain (Balearic Islands [Mallorca, Minorca]).
Distribution: Algeria, Tunisia.
