Remarks:
Previously included brevis, mauritanicus, and the population now assigned to abubakeri.
Some authors (e.g., Geniez 2015, 2018; Martínez-del-Mármol, Harris, Geniez, Pous & Salvi 2019) regard textilis as a subspecies of brevis,
based on Carranza, Arnold, Wade & Fahd (2004), who did not make any formal taxonomic changes, however.
Moreover, if brevis and textilis were synonymized, the latter would have priority, and the species herein referred to as M. brevis
would change name to M. textilis, including brevis as a subspecies.
Wade's (2002) taxonomy is followed herein, pending further molecular studies.
A record from Mauritania (Boulenger 1919; repeated by Kramer & Schnurrenberger 1963; Papenfuss 1969; and Schleich, Kästle & Kabisch 1996) was probably based on specimens from Morocco
(Padial 2006).
