Remarks: Seidel, Iverson & Adkins (1986) included Sternotherus in Kinosternon, which has been folowed by some (e.g., Bonin, Devaux & Dupre 2006), but most subsequent publications have retained Sternotherus as a valid genus (e.g., Scott, Glenn & Rissler 2018).
Distribution: E. North America.

Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies of carinatus or, more recently, of minor. Revalidated as a separate species by Scott, Glenn & Rissler (2018). Rhodin, Iverson, Bour, Fritz, Georges, Shaffer & Dijk (2017) listed Kentucky as part of the distribution of the species, but did not plot any localities in the state.
Distribution: USA (Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia).
