Orangebauch-Schlammnatter und Matanna-Schlammnatter

Orangebuget Muddersnog og Matanna-muddersnog

1843 Hypsiscopus Fitzinger (type species: Homalopsis plumbea Boie 1827)
Contents: 4 species, of which 2 (50.0%) are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of Enhydris (e.g., Murphy 2007). Revalidated by Murphy & Voris (2014).
Distribution: SE. Asia, Malay Archipelago.
Reported from: Brunei, Cambodia, China (Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong [incl. Seribuat Archipelago (incl. Tioman)]), Myanmar, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.

Hypsiscopus indonesiensis

Sulawesi Mud Snake

Sulawesi-Schlammnatter

2023 Hypsiscopus indonesiensis Hamidy, Zakky, Fitriyana & Endarwin

Distribution: Indonesia (Sulawesi).

Hypsiscopus matannensis

Matanna Mud Snake

1897 Hypsirhina matannensis Boulenger
Enhydris matannensis Haas 1950
Hypsiscopus matannensis Murphy & Voris 2014

Distribution: Indonesia (Buton, Muna, Sulawesi).

Hypsiscopus plumbea

Southern Orange-bellied Mud Snake, Orange-bellied Water Snake, Yellow-bellied Water Snake, Plumbeous Water Snake, Lead Water Snake, Grey Water Snake, Common Rice Paddy Snake, Mud Creeper, (Olive Water Snake, Boie's Water Snake, Boie's Mud Snake)

Orangebauch-Schlammnatter

Orangebuget Muddersnog

1827 Homalopsis plumbea Boie
Coluber plumbeus Eydoux & Gervais 1837
Hypsirhina plumbea Gray 1842
Hypsiscopus plumbea Fitzinger 1843
Eurostus plumbeus Duméril & Bibron 1854
Enhydris plumbea Stejneger 1898
1834 Hypsirhina hardwickii Gray (Murphy 2007)
1929 Helicops wettsteini Amaral (Wallach in The Reptile Database [viewed 7 Oct. 2013])

Remarks: Previously included the populations now assigned to murphyi. Occurs in Nicobar Islands (India), however, I have found no support for Murphy's (2007) claim that it is found in the Andaman Islands. A single specimen is said to have come from the Moluccas, which would extend the range eastwards (Murphy 2007).
Distribution: Brunei, Cambodia, India (Andaman & Nicobar Islands [Nicobar Islands]), Indonesia (Bali, Bangka, Belitung, Java, Kabaena, Kalimantan, Karimunjawa Islands, Sulawesi, Sumatra), Malaysia (Sabah, West Malaysia [incl. Seribuat Archipelago (incl. Tioman)]), Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

2022 Hypsiscopus murphyi Bernstein, Voris, Stuart, Phimmachak, Seateun, Sivongxay, Neang, Karns, Andrews, Osterhage, Phipps & Ruane (syn. David & Vogel 2024)

Remarks: Previously regarded as the northern populations of plumbea. Specimens from India (incl. Andaman Islands) and Myanmar will need to be identified pending future molecular and morphological comparisons (Bernstein, Voris, Stuart, Phimmachak, Seateun, Sivongxay, Neang, Karns, Andrews, Osterhage, Phipps & Ruane 2022).
Distribution: Cambodia, China (Fujian, Guangdong [incl. Nan Ao Island], Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong [incl. Shek Kwu Chau Island], Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang), Laos, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.
