Closely related to the genus
Lycodon.
The taxonomic relationship between the two genera is unclear (Kaiser, Kaiser & O'Shea 2018).
There is a single record from Bougainville (North Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea) which is considered doubtful (O'Shea 1996).
Some records, e.g., East Timor, Misool and Numfoor (Indonesia), and New South Wales (Australia), are unassigned to species level (see Kaiser, Kaiser & O'Shea 2018).

Records from Sabah refer to calligocephalus, previously regarded as a population of borneensis.
Presence in Kalimantan (Indonesia) needs confirmation, although reported by Iskandar, Jenkins, Das, Auliya, Inger & Lilley (2012), however, without references.
Presence in Thailand is regarded as doubtful, although listed by Nabhitabhata, Chan-ard & Chuaynkern (2004) (see Pauwels & David 2005; David, Cox, Pauwels, Chanhome & Thirakhupt 2004).
