Remarks:
Several subspecies or synonyms of punctatus have been regarded as separate species, but most authors since Croulet (1965) have recognized only a single species. Collins (1991) suggested recognition of acricus and amabilis as separate species, but only few authors have followed this proposal. However, Pinou, Haas & Maxson (1995) and Fontanella & Siddall (2010) presented evidence which indicated that punctatus contains more than one geneticlly distinct species.
