Taxonomy of the family Elapidae [terrestrial species]
Bibliography of the genus Walterinnesia
Biodiversity of the family Elapidae [terrestrial species]

Genus
Walterinnesia

Black Desert Cobras

Wüstenkobras

Ørkenkobraer

1887 Walterinnesia Lataste (type species: Walterinnesia aegyptia Lataste 1887)
Contents: 2 species, none of which are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Distribution: Egypt (incl. Sinai), Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey.

Walterinnesia aegyptia

Western Black Desert Cobra, Desert Black Snake, Sinai Desert Cobra, (Innes' Snake)

Schwarze Wüstenkobra

Vestlig Ørkenkobra

1887 Walterinnesia aegyptia Lataste
1908 Atractaspis wilsoni Wall (Golay & al. 1993)

Remarks: Previously included morgani (e.g., McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999). Records from Lebanon and Libya are regarded as erroneous (Schleich, Kästle & Kabisch 1996; David & Ineich 1999). Habeeb & Rastegar-Pouyani (2016) listed both morgani and aegyptia from northern Iraq, but the latter is most likely an error.
Distribution: Egypt (incl. Sinai), Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia.

Walterinnesia morgani

Eastern Black Desert Cobra, (Morgan's Desert Cobra)

Morgans Wüstenkobra

Østlig Ørkenkobra

1905 Naja morgani Mocquard
Walterinnesia morgani Nilson & Rastegar-Pouyani 2007

Remarks: Regarded for many years as a synonym of aegyptia (e.g., Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992). Revalidated by Nilson & Rastegar-Pouyani (2007). Rajabizadeh (2017) retained morgani as a synonym of aegyptia, followed by Kamali (2020). Although the genus has been listed for Kuwait by several authors, Amr, Alenezi, Al-Sayegh & Baker (2021) did not include any of the two Walterinnesia species for the country, neither did they claim previous reports to be erroneous. Although reported (as aegyptia) by several authors from Syria (e.g., Welch 1983; Joger 1984; Disi & Böhme 1996; Golay & al. 1993; Gruber 1989; Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992), presence of this species in the country was not confirmed with voucher specimens until published by Sindaco, Serra & Menegon (2006, as aegyptia).
Distribution: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey.
