The genera contained in this family were previously included in
Iguanidae (e.g., Schmidt 1953; Smith & Taylor 1950; Peters & Donoso-Barros 1970). Family status was given by Frost & Etheridge (1989), and Frost, Etheridge, Janies & Titus (2001).
