  220 species of which 157 (71.4%) are endemic - 12 genera of which none are endemic (as of December 31st, 2018).

Remarks: The species and genera of this family were previously included in the family Gekkonidae (e.g., Wermuth 1965; Goin, Goin & Zug 1978). Now considered a separate family (e.g., Henderson & Powell 2009; Vitt & Caldwell 2014).

Distribution:  S. Mexico, Central America, South America, West Indies, NW. and E. Africa, Middle East, Central Asia.
