Taxonomy of the family Colubridae
Bibliography of the genus Verdigrophis
Biodiversity of the family Colubridae

Genus
Verdigrophis

Bluish-green Bush Rat Snakes

Blau-grüne Strauchnattern

Blågrønne Buskrottesnoge

2024 Verdigrophis Wallach, Midtgaard & Hsiao (type species: Coluber prasinus Blyth 1854)
Contents: 2 species, of which none is endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: The species of this genus have had a turbulent taxonomic history, with prasinus previously being assigned to Elaphe (e.g., Schulz 1996), Gonyosoma (e.g., Das 1997), Rhadinophis (e.g., Burbrink & Lawson 2007), and Rhynchophis (e.g., Wallach, Williams & Boundy 2014). V. coeruleus was first described in 2021. Chen, McKelvy, Grismer, Matsui, Nishikawa & Burbrink (2014) synonymized prasinus with Gonyosoma, along with Gonyophis, Rhadinophis, and Rhynchophis. Wallach, Midtgaard & Hsiao (2024) revalidated the latter three genera and described Verdigrophis as a new genus to accomodate coeruleus and prasinus.
Distribution: SE. Asia.
Reported from: Bhutan, China (Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Sichuan, Yunnan), India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, West Bengal), Laos, Malaysia (West Malaysia), Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

Verdigrophis coeruleus

Blue-eyed Bush Rat Snake

Blauaugen-Strauchnatter

Blåøjet Buskrottesnog

2021 Gonyosoma coeruleum Liu, Hou, Lwin, Wang & Rao
Verdigrophis coeruleus Wallach, Midtgaard & Hsiao 2024

Remarks: Previously confused with prasinus. Many older records of prasinus refer to coeruleus.
Distribution: China (Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Sichuan, Yunnan), Laos, Malaysia (West Malaysia), Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

Verdigrophis prasinus

Green Bush Rat Snake, Green Tree Racer, Green Mountain Racer, Green Trinket Snake

Grüne Strauchnatter, Grüne Baumnatter

Grøn Buskrottesnog

1854 Coluber prasinus Blyth
Elaphe prasina Smith 1930
Gonyosoma prasina Das 1997
Rhadinophis prasinus Burbrink & Lawson 2007 (by implication)
Rhynchophis prasinus Wallach, Williams & Boundy 2014
Verdigrophis prasinus Wallach, Midtgaard & Hsiao 2024
1864 Gonyosoma gramineum Günther (syn. Smith 1943; David, Campbell, Deuti, Hauser, Luu, Nguyen, Orlov, Pauwels, Scheinberg, Sethy, Smits, Teynié & Vogel 2022)

Remarks: Previously confused with coeruleus. Now restricted to Bhutan, Northeast India, and Myanmar. Many older records of prasinus refer to coeruleus. Reports from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are considered erroneous, as no voucher specimens exist (Das 1999). Presence in Nepal needs confirmation (Kästle, Rai & Schleich 2013). A population of uncertain taxonomic status in southern Laos and Central Vietnam has also been assigned to this species.
Distribution: Bhutan, India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, West Bengal), Myanmar.
