Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies or synonym of variegatus (e.g., Stejneger 1893; Conant 1965; Dixon 1970). Revalidated by Grismer (1988, 1998). Presence in Durango was considered in need of confirmation by Valdez-Lares, Muñiz-Martínez, Gadsden, Aguirre-León, Castañeda-Gaytán & González-Trápaga (2013), however, it is included for the state herein, following Lemos-Espinal, Smith, Gadsden-Esparza, Valdez-Lares & Woolrich-Piña (2018).
Distribution: Mexico (Durango, Sinaloa, Sonora).

Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies of elegans. Raised to species status by Butler, Smith & Flores-Villela (2022). Lemos-Espinal & Smith (2020) listed the species as potentionally occurring in Mexico State (as elegans), although reported already by Monroy-Vilchis, Domínguez-Vega & Urbina (2014). Records from S. Guatemala and El Salvador are doubtful and should be confirmed.
Distribution: El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico (Chiapas, Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Mexico State, Michoacan, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca).
