Reported from: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa (Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West Province, Northern Cape, Western Cape).

Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of namaquensis (e.g., Bocage 1895; Laurent 1964). Validity confirmed by Conradie, Measey, Branch & Tolley (2012). Specific epithet spelled benguelensis herein, following Parrinha, Marques, Heinicke, Khalid, Parker, Tolley, Childers, Conradie, Bauer & Ceríaco (2021).
Presence in Namibia is unclear, although reported by some authors (e.g., Branch 1998; Griffin 2003; Herrmann & Branch 2013). Parrinha, Marques, Heinicke, Khalid, Parker, Tolley, Childers, Conradie, Bauer & Ceríaco (2021) only included Angola in the distribution.
Distribution: Angola.

Remarks: Previously considered endemic to South Africa (e.g., Branch 1998; Turner 2017), although listed for the country by other authors (e.g.; Mertens 1955; Griffin 2003; Herrmann & Branch 2013). Confirmed for Namibia through old museum records and at least one extant population by Kirchof, Penner, Rödel & Müller (2017). The latter authors also corrected the year of description to 1845, not 1844 or 1849, as commonly attributed.

Remarks: There is no documentation for the occurrence of this species in Angola. Previous records from the country (e.g., Szczerbak 1975; Branch 1998) should be considered misidentifications (Marques, Ceríaco, Blackburn & Bauer 2018).

Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies of lineoocellata (e.g., Szczerbak 1975). Bauer & Branch (2001) suggested pulchella to be a separate species. This was confirmed by Makhoka, Bauer, Mayer & Matthee (2007), and followed by Herrmann & Branch (2013).
