Biodiversity of the family Agamidae

Genus
Acanthocercus

Kølrygagamer

1843 Acanthocercus Fitzinger (type species: Stellio erythrogaster Nikolski 1896)
Contents: 15 species, of which 1 (6.7%) is endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of Agama (e.g., Wermuth 1967). Although the revalidation of Acanthocercus was suggested by Baig & Böhme (1991), the formal resurrection was made by Schätti & Gasparetti (1994) and confirmed by Baig & Böhme (1997).
Distribution: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Congo-Kinshasa, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Oman, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Africa (Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West Province), Tanzania, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Acanthocercus atricollis

Black-necked Ridgeback Agama, Black-necked Arboreal Agama, Black-necked Tree Agama, Black-necked Agama, Southern Tree Agama, South African Agama

Blaukehlagame

Sorthalset Kølrygagam, (Blåhovedet Agam)

1866 Stellio nigricollis Bocage (Wagner, Greenbaum, Bauer, Kusamba & Leaché 2018)

Remarks: Previously included or confused with cyanocephalus, gregorii, kiwuensis, margaritae, minutus, and ugandaensis. Taxonomic history has been turbulent. Many authors have confused atricollis and cyanogaster. Boulenger (1896) regarded them as perhaps inseparable, and some authors have synonymised the two (e.g., Parker 1942; Loveridge 1957). Klausewitz (1957) regarded them as distinct, and also Largen & Spawls (2006) and Wagner & Böhme (2007) regarded them as separate (although somewhat poorly differentiated) species. Records of atricollis from Congo-Kinshasa refer to other species.
Distribution: Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa (Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West Province), Zimbabwe.

Blaukopfagame

Blåhovedet Kølrygagam

1925 Agama cyanocephala Falk
Acanthocercus cyanocephalus Ceríaco, Bauer, Blackburn & Lavres 2014

Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of atricollis (e.g., Wermuth 1967) or confused with margaritae. Revalidated as a separate species by Ceríaco, Bauer, Blackburn & Lavres (2014), who referred to the then unpublished revisionary work by Wagner, Greenbaum, Bauer, Kusamba & Leaché (2018). Records from Namibia and western Angola refer to margaritae (Wagner, Butler, Ceríaco & Bauer 2021).
Distribution: Angola, Congo-Kinshasa, Zambia.

Acanthocercus cyanogaster

Blaubäuchige Keilrückenagame

Blåbuget Kølrygagam

1835 Stellio cyanogaster Rüppell
Agama cyanogaster Blanford 1870
Acanthocercus cyanogaster Baig & Böhme 1997

Remarks: Previously confused with atricollis. According to Largen & Spawls (2006), cyanogaster is currently known with certainty only from Ethiopia and Eritrea. Following these authors, all records of cyanogaster from other than these two countries are regarded herein as representing various other species of the atricollis complex. However, the distribution of the many species of this group is unclear (Wagner, Greenbaum, Bauer, Kusamba & Leaché 2018). Previously included adramitana, annectens, phillipsi, yemenensis (e.g., Wermuth 1967), and the populations now assigned to margaritae. The type locality is Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), but should be Massawa (Eritrea) (Anderson 1896).
Distribution: Eritrea, Ethiopia.

Kenianische Keilrückenagame

Kenyansk Kølrygagam

Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies of atricollis (e.g., Klausewitz 1957). Revalidated as a separate species by Wagner, Greenbaum, Bauer, Kusamba & Leaché (2018).
Distribution: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia.
