Remarks: Previously included in the family Teiidae (e.g., Peters & Donoso-Barros 1970; Goin, Goin & Zug 1978). Separated from Teiidae by Presch (1983). Formerly included the genera Alopoglossus and Ptychoglossus, which were separated into their own family, Alopoglossidae, by Goicoechea, Frost, Riva, Pellegrino, Sites, Rodrigues & Padial (2016)

Distribution:  Mexico, Central and South America, West Indies.
