Remarks: Nouira, Blanc, Crochet, Frétey, Geniez, Ineich, Massary, Ohler, Tlili & Lescure (2022) suggested that boehmei might be a synonym of vipera.

Remarks: Previously included gasperetti. Although reported from Syria (e.g., Disi & Böhme 1996 [actually referring to gasperetti]), no species of this genus occurs in the country (Martens 1997).

Other common names:
mendelssohni: Mendelssohn's Horned Viper
Remarks: Previously regarded as a subspecies of cerastes. Raised to species status by Werner, Verdier, Rosenman & Sivan (1991), although already Werner (1987) treated it as such. Although the species is found in southern Israel near the border to Sinai, and in spite of previous reports of its presence in Egypt (e.g., Gruber 1989; Spawls & Branch 1995), it has not been documented from the country (Baha el Din 2006). Although reported from Syria (e.g., Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992, Disi & Böhme 1996 [as cerastes]), the species is not present in the country (Martens 1997).
Distribution: Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.
