Remarks:
Previously regarded as a subspecies of tetraspis (e.g., Wermuth & Mertens 1977).
Revalidated as a separate species by Eaton, Martin, Thorbjarnarson & Amato (2009).
Exact distribution boundaries between the two species are unclear.
Angolan records of tetraspis are tentatively assigned herein to osborni.

May now be extinct in Gambia (Emms, Jambang, Bahl, Mankali, Paziaud & Barnett 2007) and in Uganda, where it has not been seen since the 1940's
(Spawls, Howell, Drewes & Ashe 2002).
