Remarks: The genera assigned to this family were previously included in Iguanidae (e.g., Peters & Donoso-Barros 1970). Family status was given by Frost & Etheridge (1989), who included three subfamilies (Leiocephalinae, Liolaeminae, Tropidurinae). The three subfamilies were subsequently given status as separate families by Frost, Etheridge, Janies & Titus (2001).

Distribution:  South America.
