Contents: 11 species, of which 9 (81.8%) are endemic.

Remarks: The species of this genus were previously included in Cnemidophorus. Validity of Ameivula supported by Tucker, Colli, Giugliano, Hedges, Hendry, Lemmon, Lemmon, Sites & Pyron (2016). Previously included the species now assigned to Glaucomastix.
Distribution: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (Alagoas, Bahia, Ceara, Distrito Federal, Espirito Santo, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Para, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Piaui, Rio Grande do Norte, Sao Paulo, Sergipe, Tocantins), Paraguay.

Remarks: Previously included pyrrhogularis. Specimens recorded from Rondonia (Vanzolini 1986) represent an undescribed species (Avila-Pires 1995). Specimens recorded from Para (Brazil) are believed to have wrong locality data (Avila-Pires 1995). Records from Bolivia represent abalosi (Arias, Recoder, Álvarez, Etchepare, Quipildor, Lobo & Rodrigues 2018). Records from Paraguay represent abalosi or apipensis (Cacciali, Scott, Aquino-Ortiz, Fitzgerald & Smith 2016; Arias, Recoder, Álvarez, Etchepare, Quipildor, Lobo & Rodrigues 2018). The described distribution in Aparicio, Avila-Pires, Moravec & Nogueira (2019) is in strong disagreement with the map provided by these authors.

Remarks: Regarded as a synonym of ocellifer by Oliveira, Gehara, São-Pedro, Chen, Myers, Burbrink, Mesquita, Garda, Colli, Rodrigues, Arias, Zaher, Santos & Costa (2015), however, Arias, Recoder, Álvarez, Etchepare, Quipildor, Lobo & Rodrigues (2018) retained pyrrhogularis as a valid species.
