Trachylepis maculata

(no common name)

-

-

1839 Tiliqua maculata Gray
Trachylepis maculata Miralles, Chaparro & Harvey 2009

Remarks: Status uncertain. Although previously regarded as synonymous with atlantica (e.g., Boulenger 1887; Travassos 1946, 1948), it is distinct from that species (Mausfeld & Vrcibradic 2002; Miralles, Chaparro & Harvey 2009). The type locality is Demerara, Guyana, but maculata does not correspond to any species presently known to occur in that country or anywhere else in the New World. If the specimens were actually collected in Guyana, they may have been introduced from the Afro-Malagasy region during the transatlantic slave trade period, which would better explain the allocation of maculata to the mainly Afro-Malagasy genus Trachylepis, although the genus has managed to cross the Atlantic (see atlantica). It is unknown whether maculata is synonymous with a species from the Afro-Malagasy region (Miralles, Chaparro & Harvey 2009).
Distribution: Unknown.

Remarks: Previously included albopunctata, brauni, damarana, hildebrandtii, isselii, and laevigata. See further remarks under isselii regarding its status. Also nyikae may prove to be a separate species (Weinell & Bauer 2018). The map shows the restricted distribution of varia (excluding the species above), which is still considered an unresolved species complex (see Weinell & Bauer 2018). Hence, more species are likely to be revalidated from the synonymy or described as new species from the complex in the future, thus restricting the distribution of varia further.
Distribution: Burundi, Congo-Kinshasa, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique (incl. Bazaruto Archipelago [incl. Benguerua]), Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa (Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West Province, Northern Cape), South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
