Remarks: The species of this genus were previously included in Calliophis (e.g., Smith 1943, Taylor 1965), or Hemibungarus (e.g., David & Ineich 1999). They were separated from those genera by Slowinski, Boundy & Lawson (2001).
Distribution: S. and E. Asia.

Remarks: Previously included annularis, gorei, iwasakii and swinhoei, as well as the populations now assigned to peinani. Apart from records from Tibet and Yunnan, records from China and Vietnam refer to other species. However, macclellandii may be present in Vietnam. Records from Bangladesh refer to gorei (Biakzuala, Mirza, Patel, Rathee & Lalremsanga 2023). Records from Taiwan refer to swinhoei. Records from Ryukyu Islands (Japan) refer to iwasakii. The taxon nigriventer was previously regarded as a synonym of macclellandii (e.g., Golay & al. 1993), then revalidated as a separate species by Mirza, Varma & Campbell (2020), but most recently synonymized again with macclellandii (Smart, Ingrasci, Sarker, Lalremsanga, Murphy, Ota, Tu, Shouche, Orlov & Smith 2021).
