Taxonomy of the family Cylindrophiidae
Bibliography of the genus Cylindrophis
Biodiversity of the genus Cylindrophis

Genus
Cylindrophis

Oriental Pipe Snakes, Asian Pipe Snakes, Cylinder Snakes

Walzenschlangen

Asiatiske Cylinderslanger

1828 Cylindrophis Wagler (type species: Cylindrophis resplendens Wagler 1828)

Contents: 15 species, of which 12 (80.0%) are endemic.
Endemism: 0% 100%
Remarks: Previously included in the family Aniliidae (e.g., Dowling 1959; Goin, Goin & Zug 1978) or the family Uropeltidae (e.g., Smith, Smith & Sawin 1977; Grazziotin, Zaher, Ferrarezzi, Klaczko, Bonatto & Wilkinson 2007). Now assigned to its own, separate family, Cylindrophiidae (e.g., Cundall, Wallach & Rossman 1993).
Distribution: Brunei, Cambodia, China (Fujian, Hainan), East Timor, Indonesia (Babar Islands, Bacan, Banggai Islands, Bangka, Belitung, Boano, Buton, Damar, Flores, Java, Kalimantan, Komodo, Lombok, Madura, Natuna Islands, Riau Islands, Sangir Islands, Sula Islands [incl. Damar Pipe Snake, (Aru Pipe Snake)

Damar-Walzenschlange, (Aru-Walzenschlange)

Damar-cylinderslange

1920 Cylindrophis aruensis Boulenger

Remarks: Presence in Aru Islands, the type locality, is questionable (Iskandar & Colijn 2001), although reported by some authors (e.g., Haas 1950; McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999).
Distribution: Indonesia (Damar).

Cylindrophis boulengeri

Wetar Pipe Snake, (Boulenger's Pipe Snake)

Wetar-Walzenschlange

Cylindrophis burmanus

Burmese Pipe Snake

Burmesische Walzenschlange

Burmesisk Cylinderslange

1943 Cylindrophis rufus burmanus Smith
Cylindrophis burmanus Iskandar & Colijn 2001

Remarks: Iskandar & Colijn (2001) listed burmanus as a separate species, but without discussion or references. Even after the separation of burmanus, they noted that ruffus is composite. Validity confirmed by Amarasinghe, Campbell, Hallermann, Sidik, Supriatna & Ineich (2015).
Distribution: Myanmar.

Cylindrophis engkariensis

Engkari Pipe Snake

Engkari-Walzenschlange

Engkari-cylinderslange

Annam-Walzenschlange

Annam-cylinderslange

2015 Cylindrophis jodiae Amarasinghe, Ineich, Campbell & Hallermann in Amarasinghe, Campbell, Hallermann, Sidik, Supriatna & Ineich

Remarks: This species represents what was previously regarded as northern populations of ruffus (see further remarks under that species). Presence in Hong Kong needs confirmation, since there is only a single, 19th century record (Karsen, Lau & Bogadek 1998, as C. ruffus).
Distribution: Cambodia, China (Fujian, Hainan), Laos, Malaysia (West Malaysia [incl. Penang Island]), Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam.

Cylindrophis lineatus

Lined Pipe Snake, Striped Pipe Snake, (Blanford's Pipe Snake)

Gestreifte Walzenschlange

Stribet Cylinderslange

1880 Cylindrophis lineatus Dennys

Remarks: The type locality was originally "Singapore", but Figueroa & Low (2021) suggested to change this to "Borneo". These authors also demonstrated that the authorship should correctly be Dennys 1880, not Blanford 1881, as previously thought. They also questioned the presence of the species in Kalimantan, although reported by Das & Iskandar (2012) and Bernstein, Bauer, McGuire, Arida, Kaiser, Kieckbusch & Mecke (2020).
Distribution: Indonesia (Kalimantan), Malaysia (Sarawak).

Tortrix celebensis Gray 1849
1927 Cylindrophis celebensis Smith [not Tortrix rufa var. Celebensis Gray 1849] (McDowell 1975; McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999)
1935 Cylindrophis heinrichi Ahl (McDowell 1975; McDiarmid, Campbell & Touré 1999)

Remarks: Although reported from Halmahera (e.g., Ahl 1935), presence of melanotus in this island is questionable (Iskandar & Colijn 2001). Records from Boano refer to osheai (Kieckbusch, Mader, Kaiser & Mecke 2018).

Remarks: Previously included burmanus and populations now assigned to jodiae. It is unclear whether certain populations of ruffus represent jodiae and/or unnamed species. Specimens north of the Isthmus of Kra are herein regarded as representing either burmanus or jodiae, following recent works (Kieckbusch, Mecke, Hartmann, Ehrmantraut, O'Shea & Kaiser 2016; Bernstein, Bauer, McGuire, Arida, Kaiser, Kieckbusch & Mecke 2020; David, Teynié & Vogel 2023).
