Montanucci (1973) regarded anomala as a species of uncertain status, not belonging to the genus Pholidobolus.
Reeder (1996) regarded the generic allocation to Pholidobolus as correct and revalidated the species.
Mamani, Chaparro, Correa, Alarcón, Salas & Catenazzi (2020) showed that the species is nested within Cercosaura and reassigned it to this genus.
