Records from Parana (e.g., Henderson 1997) and Santa Catarina (e.g., Henderson 2002) are considered erroneous (Costa & Bérnils 2018). As shown by Frétey (2019), the specific epithet hortulana is a noun in apposition, not an adjective. Thus, the correct spelling is hortulana, although hortulanus is seen almost consistently in older publications.
Distribution: Bolivia, Brazil (Acre, Alagoas, Amapa, Amazonas, Bahia, Ceara, Espirito Santo, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Para [incl. Marajo Island], Paraiba, Pernambuco, Piaui, Rio de Janeiro [incl. Ilha Grande Island], Rio Grande do Norte, Rondonia, Roraima, Sao Paulo, Sergipe, Tocantins), Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Surinam, Venezuela.
