Remarks: Previously regarded as a synonym of ornatissimus (e.g., Campbell & Lamar 1989, Cunha & Nascimento 1982). Revalidated as a separate species by Cunha & Nascimento (1991). The type locality ("Mato Grosso") may refer to Rondonia (Vanzolini 1986), a territory included in Mato Grosso at the time of the original description of albicinctus.

Remarks: Bahena-Basave's (1995) record from Quintana Roo refer to apiatus (Campbell & Lamar 2004 [by implication]). The former subspecies importunus is now considered a synonym of nigrocinctus zunilensis. Records of browni from Honduras refer to nigrocinctus. Presence in Puebla is regarded as unconfirmed, although mentioned to occur in the state by Campbell & Lamar (2004), however, the authors did not plot any localities in their distribution map, and the species was not included for Puebla by Woolrich-Piña, García-Padilla, DeSantis, Johnson, Mata-Silva & Wilson (2017) in their work on the herpetofauna of the state. Smith & Chrapliwy's (1958) paratype of proximans from Jalisco has later been re-identified as M. distans zweifeli (J. Reyes-Velasco, pers. comm., Oct. 9, 2012).

Remarks: According to Campbell & Lamar (2004), the distribution in Brazil reaches as far north as Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, however, their distribution map also showed localities farther to the northeast (probably Rio Grande do Norte).

Starace (1998) suggested that diutius represented a separate species, and it was treated as such by some authors (e.g., Dijn, Molgo, Marty, Luger, Ringler, Crothers, Noonan & Fitzgerald 2007; David, Dobiey & Vogel 2018). Validity supported by Jowers, Garcia, Mudarra, Charles & Murphy (2019). Not mentioned for Guyana by Kuijpers (2024).

Remarks: Records from Colima and Morelos represent misidentified browni (Reyes-Velasco, Adams, Boissinot, Parkinson, Campbell, Castoe & Smith 2020). A record of fitzingeri from Michoacan refer to laticollaris (Smith & Flores-Villela 1994). A report from Jalisco by (Chávez-Avila, Casas-Andreu, García-Aguayo, Cifuentes-Lemus & Cupul-Magaña 2015, citing IUCN 2010) is regarded as doubtful as no other publications have been found to confirm the presence of the species in this state. Not listed for Oaxaca by Mata-Silva, García-Padilla, Rocha, DeSantis, Johnson, Ramírez-Bautista & Wilson (2021). The nominal species bernadi was revalidated as a separate species by Roze (1996), but subsequently synonymized with tener by Streicher, McEntee, Drzich, Card, Schield, Smart, Parkinson, Jezkova, Smith & Castoe (2016). Spelling of specific epithet (tener) according to Frost & Collins (1988).
