Gekko semipalmatus Günther (Rösler & Tiedemann 2007) |
Remarks:
Previously included scabridus and similignum (e.g., Stejneger 1932; Wermuth 1965). Hainan records refer to similignum. Presence in Vietnam is doubtful, although listed by several authors (e.g., Bobrov 1993, 1995; Darevsky 1990; David & Ineich 2009; Nguyen, Ho & Nguyen 2009; Zhao & Adler 1993), but now considered restricted to China (Ngo & Gamble 2010; Rösler, Bauer, Heinicke, Greenbaum, Jackman, Nguyen & Ziegler 2011). Bourret (1937, 1939) considered palmatus a synonym of chinensis, however, Ota, Lau, Weidenhöfer, Yasukawa & Bogadek (1995) demonstrated the validity of both forms.
Distribution:
China

1858 | |
Gekko indicus Girard (Wermuth 1965) |
1955 | |
Gekko gecko azhari Mertens |
Remarks:
Previously included reevesii. Records from Pakistan (e.g., Das 1996; Wermuth 1965) are based on the subspecies azhari, originally described from "East Pakistan" (today's Bangladesh), which has been misinterpreted as Eastern Pakistan (Schleich & Kästle (eds.) 2002). A record from Micronesia is based on a mislabelled specimen or an accidental introduction (Bauer 1994). Reports from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are considered erroneous, as no voucher specimens exist (Das 1999). Not recorded recently from Taiwan (Zhao & Adler 1993). No recent confirmation from Madagascar (Grossmann 2004), although reported by Rooij (1915).

Gekko hokouensis Zhou, Liu & Li 1982 |
1962 | |
Luperosaurus amissus Taylor (Ota, Lue, Chen & Brown 1989) |
Remarks:
Previously included liboensis and the population now assigned to guishanensis.
Previously regarded as a synonym of japonicus (e.g., Pope 1935; Wermuth 1965).
Toda, Hikida & Ota (2001) demonstrated that hokouensis includes two genetically divergent, but morphologically almost identical forms,
which occur on five islands of the Okinawa Group, Riukiu Islands, Japan.
The two cryptic species have not yet been formally been separated, and their relationship to the typical, continental hokouensis remains unsolved.
Presence in the Philippines, based on the type locality of
Luperosaurus amissus Taylor 1962 (Tablas Island), is probably in error (Ota, Lue, Chen & Brown 1989; Linkem, Siler, Diesmos, Sy & Brown 2010).

Remarks:
Previously included hokouensis (e.g., Pope 1935; Wermuth 1965). Although Rösler, Ziegler, Vu, Herrmann & Böhme (2005) listed japonicus for Vienam, it was neither included by Bobrov & Semenov (2008), nor by Nguyen, Ho & Nguyen (2009). The inclusion of this species in the fauna of Vietnam by Bourret (1937, 1939) has been suggested to be based on misidentified palmatus (Ota, Lau, Weidenhofer, Yasukawa & Bogadek 1995), but Bourret's description fits neither japonicus nor palmatus. It might instead represent canhi. Because Bourret's specimens cannot be located, it is not possible to determine their true identity. Although David & Ineich (2009) stated that japonicus was indeed recorded from Vietnam by Nguyen & Ho (1996), these latter authors considered the presence of japonicus in Vietnam doubtful, unless Bourret's specimens or new material turn up (Rösler, Nguyen, Doan, Ho, Nguyen & Ziegler 2010). Brown & Alcala's (1978) single record of japonicus from the Philippines was based on the type locality of
Luperosaurus amissus Taylor 1962 (Tablas Island), which they believed was in error. Subsequently, hokouensis has been revalidated, and amissus included in its synonymy (Ota, Lue, Chen & Brown 1989). Records from Taiwan (e.g., Stejneger 1907, Wermuth 1965) are believed to refer to hokouensis (Zhao & Adler 1993).

Remarks:
Now restricted to southern Thailand and West Malaysia, west of the Titiwangsa Mountains (Grismer, Pinto, Quah, Anuar, Cota, McGuire, Iskandar, Wood & Grismer 2022).
Previously included albofasciolatus, albomaculatus, verreauxii, and the populations now assigned to hulk, siamensis, and stoliczkai.
Records from West Malaysia, east of the Titiwangsa Mountains, and Singapore refer to hulk (Grismer, Pinto, Quah, Anuar, Cota, McGuire, Iskandar, Wood & Grismer 2022).
All records from Borneo and Natuna Islands are provisionally assigned to albofasciolatus.
Records from Sumatra and nearby islands (Bangka, Banyak Islands, Nias, Siberut) refer to albomaculatus (Grismer, Pinto, Quah, Anuar, Cota, McGuire, Iskandar, Wood & Grismer 2022).
Records from the Andaman Islands refer to verreauxii (Ota, Hikida & Matsui 1991).
Records from the Nicobar Islands refer to stoliczkai (Chandramouli, Gokulakrishnan, Sivaperuman & Grismer 2021).
Records from Lakshadweep (e.g., Rao 1991), Bangladesh (e.g., Sarker & Sarker 1985) and Myanmar (e.g., Taylor 1963; Rösler, Bauer, Heinicke, Greenbaum, Jackman, Nguyen & Ziegler 2011)
need confirmation.
Records from Java are most likely based on a misidentified specimen of gecko (Grismer, Pinto, Quah, Anuar, Cota, McGuire, Iskandar, Wood & Grismer 2022).
Status of records from East Timor, Bali, Sulawesi, and Togian Islands is unclear.
Some authors have regarded stentor as a valid species (e.g., Tan Fui Lian 1993).
