Contents: Endemicity: 70 genera of which 28 (40.0%) are endemic   0% 100% 347 species of which 142 (40.9%) are endemic   0% 100% Remarks: Previously regarded as part of the family Colubridae (e.g., Smith 1943; Loveridge 1957; Guibe 1958; Broadley 1983; Leviton, Anderson, Adler & Minton 1992; Chippaux 2001; Zug, Vitt & Caldwell 2001). Some authors (e.g., Zaher, Grazziotin, Cadle, Murphy, Moura-Leite & Bonatto 2009; Zug, Vitt & Caldwell 2001; Meng & al. 2016) recognize a further division of the family with as many as six additional families proposed: Atractaspididae, Aparallactidae, Prosymnidae, Psammophiidae, Pseudoxyrhophiidae, Pseudaspididae. Whether all or some of these proposed families will eventually become generally accepted or not remains to be seen. For conservative reasons, these groups are provisionally retained as part of a wider defined family Lamprophiidae, following several recent works (e.g., # Vidal, Delmas & Hedges 2007; # Pyron, Burbrink, Colli, Nieto-Montes de Oca, Vitt, Kuczynski & Wiens 2011; # Wallach, Williams & Boundy 2014).
