Biodiversity of the family Scincidae Bibliography of the family Scincidae

Scincidae

Skinks
Skinke, Glattechsen     Skinker

Contents: Endemicity:
168 genera of which 90 (53.6%) are endemic  0% 100%
1,782 species of which 1,416 (79.5%) are endemic  0% 100%

Remarks: Hedges & Conn (2012) suggested splitting the skinks into 7 different families: Acontidae, Egerniidae, Eugongylidae, Lygosomidae, Mabuyidae, Scincidae, and Sphenomorphidae, several of which were previously considered subfamilies, and the first author subsequently named two more families, Ateuchosauridae and Ristellidae (Hedges 2014). In contrast, Pyron & al. (2013) retained traditional taxonomy with a single skink family, Scincidae, but recognized only three different subfamilies (Acontinae, Lygosominae, Scincinae). Until consensus has been established among taxonomists, the family Scincidae is retained herein in its traditional sense, pending further studies, including a complete analysis of all known genera.

Distribution:  Almost cosmopolitan, but absent from northernmost and southernmost regions.
